William Kooiman develops graphical computer interfaces and prototype systems for interacting with information and visualizing data. He has produced the Environmental Site Analyzer (ESA) CD-ROM, a computer program that helps Navy test planners and buyers choose the most appropriate site for testing fleet systems. He also co-developed an interactive multimedia kiosk for the Odyssey maritime museum, which opened in summer 1998 on the Seattle waterfront. The kiosk featured interactive 360-degree panoramic photographs of the Seattle skyline blended with computer generated visualizations of Puget Sound bottom topography. Mr. Kooiman has also helped design an interactive environmental guide for the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and a narrowband signal excess simulator for analyzing submarine tactics. Mr. Kooiman joined the Laboratory in 1990.
