Dr. Gentemann is a senior scientist at Earth & Space Research, a non-profit research institute based in Seattle, WA, a visiting scholar at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and an affiliate of the University of Washington’s Applied Physics Laboratory. Her research focuses on air-sea interactions, upper ocean physical processes, and satellite remote sensing of sea surface temperature. She received a B.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a M.S. in Physical Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and a Ph.D. in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the University of Miami. She has served on many national and international science teams, working groups, and committees for NOAA, NASA, AGU, JAXA, and the National Academy of Sciences. In 2013, she received the American Geophysical Union Charles S. Falkenberg Award, for a “scientist under 45 years of age who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities, and stewardship of the planet through the use of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet.” In 2008, she was principal investigator of the Multi-sensor Improved Sea Surface Temperature (MISST) Project that received the National Oceanographic Partnership Program Excellence in Partnering Award. In 2001, she was part of the Satellite Ocean Atlas Team that was awarded the NASA Group Achievement Award for outstanding achievement in utilization of multiple observations from space for the study of the global oceans. She was the principal investigator on 3 large academic/governmental/commercial partnership projects, coordinating with over 20 scientists on each project. She currently has 35 peer-reviewed papers published and is a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), American Meteorological Society (AMS), and IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society.
